The system works by automatically detecting, highlighting and tracking potential targets to improve situational awareness.

The overmatch then calculates optimal firing solution, providing operators with guidance to neutralise their targets.

The tests were conducted by both day and night, including with the use of clip-on night vision devices.

The IWOO program was progressed by the Directorate to develop an overmatch capability for long-range static and moving targets, with SMARTSHOOTER successfully selected to develop prototypes based on their existing fire control systems.

To develop the overmatch optics, the fire control systems were then enhanced with additional integrations, including a variable x1 and x8 zoom which have been “stitched together” with “combat-proven fire control algorithms to assure the hit.”

“We are delighted to announce that the SMASH IWOO system, developed uniquely for the US Department of Defense IWTSD Individual Weapon Overmatch Optic project, has completed another milestone, and is now ready to move into low-rate production,” Michal Mor, chief executive officer of SMARSHOOTER said.

“Based on the unmatched capabilities of the SMASH Fire Control Systems, the SMASH IWOO solution will enhance force’s lethality, survivability, and situational awareness.”

Minor adjustments to the system are expected to further enhance the capability’s operational capability, according to Michael Trexler, special operational forces combat support coordinator/tactical offensive support program manager at IWTSD.

“There are a few minor adjustments being made to optimize performance; we are pleased with the progress demonstrated and look forward to conducting operational testing and evaluation using the dual-capabilities of IWOO prototypes in 2023 against ground targets at increased ranges and to take-down drones.”
