Spain will receive more than 153 M982A1 Excalibur tactical projectiles in a possible foreign military sale approved by the US State Department.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) notified the US Congress of the possible $48.2 million sale for the projectiles, a portable electronic fire control system, training aids, technical assistance and support on 14 June.

It adds to a previous foreign military sale valued at $21.87 million for 118 M982A1 Excalibur tactical projectiles.

The 155mm Global Positioning System-guided, extended range artillery projectiles are used for precision in-flight guidance and improved accuracy from various artillery pieces.

“This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security of the United States by improving the security of a NATO ally which is an important force for political stability and economic progress in Europe,” according to the DSCA statement published on 14 June.

“The proposed sale will improve Spain’s capability to meet current and future threats and will enhance interoperability with US forces and other allied forces.

“The enhanced capability will also strengthen its homeland defence. Spain will have no difficulty absorbing this equipment into its armed forces.”

Raytheon Company Missile Systems has been selected as the principal contractor and the contract is not expected to require US government representatives to travel to Spain.
