BAE Systems secures additional £130m munitions order

BAE Systems has been contracted to supply an additional £130 million of munitions to the British Armed Forces, following their original £280 million contract announced in July.

BAE Systems has been contracted to supply an additional £130 million of munitions to the British Armed Forces, following their original £280 million contract announced in July.

The additional order was prompted by the Ministry of Defence exercising the option to increase the original contract.

It is expected to increase the production of 155mm artillery shells, 30mm medium calibre rounds, and 5.56 ammunition.

The £410 million contract will also support the development of new munitions facilities in the United Kingdom, including a new 155mm machining line, a new explosive filling facility, and reinstated 30mm medium calibre manufacturing capabilities.

The UK Minister for Defence Procurement James Cartlidge explained that the contract was fundamental to rebuild the UK’s munitions manufacturing capability.

“As the UK continues to back Ukraine’s resistance of Russia’s illegal invasion, it’s vital we ramp up our sovereign munitions production,” Minister Cartlidge said.

“This contract will further bolster ammunition stockpiles, whilst supporting our defence industry and backing hundreds of highly skilled UK jobs.”

Glynn Plant, managing director of the munitions business at BAE Systems, welcomed the strengthened partnership with the Ministry of Defence.

“This contract builds on our extensive relationship with the UK MOD as a strategic partner for munitions supply.

“Our teams are increasing production rates, investing in people and new facilities and maximising shift patterns to meet the enhanced demand whilst ensuring every shell meets our exceptionally high standards.”

The announcement follows confirmation that BAE Systems is partnering with Kellogg Brown & Root (KBR), PA Consulting, and L3Harris to design and manufacture a deployable tactical wide area network (WAN) known as “Trinity” as part of a five-year contract with the UK Ministry of Defence.

The Ministry of Defence awarded BAE Systems an £89 million (AU$174.5 million) five-year contract to enhance frontline connectivity for military personnel, linking small reconnaissance drones, combat vehicles, fighter jets, aircraft carriers, and military commands.
