Members of Italy’s Carabinieri concluded their Public Order Operation and Operational Intervention Techniques training with Iraqi police forces in Baghdad, as part of the US-led Operation Inherent Resolve.

The training took place over two weeks, with 115 members of the Iraqi police forces graduating through the program.

Participants were taught methods of navigating public order, including how to control large crowds, protests, and sporting events.

A test of objectives was conducted at the end of the two weeks, where Iraqi police had to demonstrate control of an angry crowd employing riot control kits and public order techniques that were learnt throughout the course.

The course instructors came from the 7th Trentino Alto Adige Regiment, the 13th Friuli Venezia Giulia Regiment, the 1st Carabinieri Parachute Regiment “Tuscania”, and from the 2nd Carabinieri Mobile Brifa’des Training Center and Support Department.

Operation Inherent Resolve commenced in 2014 as part of a global effort to combat the growth of the Islamic State and continues to track and kill key members of the international terror organisation.

In early 2023, it was revealed that the United States had successfully killed Khalid Aydd Ahmad al-Jabouri, a senior leader of the terror group who was planning a series of attacks in Europe.

Following the strike, US Central Command hoped that: “The death of Khalid Aydd Ahmad al-Jabouri will temporarily disrupt the organisation’s ability to plot external attacks.”

Earlier in January, Major General Joel Vowell, commander of the Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve, met with the Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani, discussing ongoing efforts to stop the re-emergence of the Islamic State.

This came as French President Emmanuel Macron visited French troops taking part in Operation Chammal and Operation Inherent Resolve in December, recognising French servicemen who were deployed over Christmas.
