New EXOSKIN suit launched for protection against chemical agents

British engineering and protection equipment manufacturer Avon Protection has launched a new EXOSKIN-S1 CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear) protective suit designed to protect soldiers against toxic liquids and gases.

British engineering and protection equipment manufacturer Avon Protection has launched a new EXOSKIN-S1 CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear) protective suit designed to protect soldiers against toxic liquids and gases.

The new personal protective equipment is designed to NATO AEP-38 standard and offers protection against vapour, liquid, chemical warfare agents, toxic industrial chemical and biological threats for up to 24 hours at a time, according to a company statement published on 26 February this year.

The suit is engineered with a cotton poly outer layer and activated carbon inner lining, with an integrated hood with a double elasticated aperture for a secure seal around the wearer’s respirator. It also features hook and loop adjustable tabs on the lower legs, an inner leg gaiter with stirrup to prevent ingress at the ankle, and a smart layer design with a thumb loop to prevent ingress at the wrist. The suit also features two jacket zip designs with hook and loop fastening for improved integration with body armour.

“Our goal is to take full responsibility for the entire protection system by controlling the design, integration and performance of all the components needed to keep personnel safe while operating in complex CBRN environments,” according to Justin Hine, Avon Protection strategy and capability director.

“In doing so, we are approaching the CBRN protection market in a novel way: users can acquire their life-protecting ensemble equipment from a single supplier who is accountable for the entire CBRN equipment ecosystem, all while benefiting from the superior safety and assurance of the Avon Protection brand they know and trust.”

The EXOSKIN-S1 provides defence against CBRN agents, offers safety, comfort and agility, while also giving the wearer continuous protection for extended operational durations; it also features integration with other protective wear and respiratory systems, according to Hine.

Avon Protection already has NATO Support and Procurement Agency contracts for boot and glove protective equipment, as well as the FM50 respirator and accessories, with Avon Protection also offering a range of respiratory technologies such as air purifying respirators, powered air purifying respirators, escape devices, and self-contained breathing apparatus.
