The US government has announced additional security assistance for Ukraine in a new package worth around US$225 million.

The US government has announced additional security assistance for Ukraine in a new package worth around US$225 million.

On 11 July, following US President Joe Biden’s meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the US Department of Defense announced additional security assistance to meet Ukraine’s critical security and defence needs.

The announcement is the Biden administration’s 61st tranche of equipment to be provided from Department of Defense inventories for Ukraine since August 2021.

The newly approved Presidential Drawdown Authority (PDA) package, which has an estimated value of $225 million, will provide Ukraine additional capabilities to meet its most urgent needs, including the addition of air defence systems and interceptors, munitions for rocket systems and artillery, and anti-tank weapons.

“As President Biden announced earlier this week, the United States is taking joint action with Germany, Romania, the Netherlands, and Italy to strengthen Ukraine’s air defences and provide five strategic air defence systems, including Patriot batteries and SAMP/T systems, that will help protect Ukrainian cities, civilians, and soldiers,” according to a public statement published by the US Department of Defence on 11 July.

“The United States and our allies and partners remain committed to providing Ukraine with additional air defence capabilities to defend itself against Russia’s continued aggression.

“The United States will continue to work together with some 50 allies and partners to ensure Ukraine’s brave defenders receive the critical capabilities needed to fight Russian aggression.”

The capabilities detailed under the announcement include a Patriot battery, munitions for National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS), Stinger anti-aircraft missiles, ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), 155mm and 105mm artillery rounds, tube-launched optically-tracked wire-guided (TOW) equipment and missiles, Javelin and AT-4 anti-armour systems, small arms ammunition, demolitions munitions, spare parts, maintenance, and other ancillary equipment.
