The Egyptian government has requested to buy NASAMS, missiles and radar systems under a US$4.67 billion foreign military sale approved by the US State Department.
The US Congress was notified of the possible sale by the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) on 24 July.
The possible sale includes National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS), four AN/MPQ-64F1 Sentinel radar systems with associated support equipment, 100 advanced medium range air-to-air missiles extended range (AMRAAM-ER), 100 air intercept missiles 120C-8 AMRAAMs, two AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM guidance sections and one AMRAAM control section.
The sale would also include 600 AIM-9X Sidewinder Block II tactical missiles, 150 AIM-9X Sidewinder Captive Air Training Missiles, 62 AIM-9X Sidewinder Block II tactical guidance units and 20 AIM-9X Sidewinder CATM GUs.
Other equipment would include fire distribution centres, canister launcher systems, electro-optical/infrared systems, tactical control centre systems, Identification Friend or Foe model 5800 or TPX-61, AMRAAM-ER extended load trainers, AN/PSN-13 Defense Advanced Global Positioning System Receivers, technical and logistics support services.
“This proposed sale will support the foreign policy goals and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a major non-NATO ally that is a force for political stability and economic progress in the Middle East,” the US DSCA said in a published statement.
“The proposed sale will improve Egypt’s capability to meet current and future threats by improving its ability to detect various air threats. Egypt will have no difficulty absorbing this equipment into its armed forces.
“The proposed sale of this equipment and support will not alter the basic military balance in the region. There will be no adverse impact on US defence readiness as a result of this proposed sale.
The prime contractor will be RTX Corporation and the implementation of the proposed sale will require approximately 26 US government and 34 contractor representatives to travel to Egypt for an extended period for equipment de-processing/fielding, system checkout, training and technical and logistics support.
