In a major show of support for local veterans and troops, the Veteran Games will make its Darwin debut this week on 22 August, when the Robertson Barracks opens to the public for the first time.

More than 200 veterans, current serving members and spectators are expected to attend the Veteran Games regional heat, with teams of current and former Army, Navy, and Airforce personnel competing in a range of physical and mental challenges testing their teamwork and problem-solving skills.

The champion team will receive a $20,000 grant to represent Darwin at the Veteran Games national finals on the Gold Coast in October, in an initiative from the Veteran Support Force and the Northern Territory government.

Heston Russell, Veteran Support Force managing director and fifth-generation veteran, who created the Veteran Games, said its expansion into the NT is a vital step in supporting veterans across the country.

“Bringing the games to Darwin is an incredible milestone for our veteran community,” Russell said.

“With the support of the NT government and 1st Brigade, we’re showing what’s possible when Defence and community work together to back those who’ve served. This isn’t just about sport – it’s about restoring purpose, belonging and support for veterans at every stage of their journey.”

Along with the local veteran community, 1st Brigade, Navy and Airforce units, the US Marine Corps, currently based in Darwin, will also join in on the competitive spirit.

NT Minister for Veterans Jinson Charls said the landmark event not only honours the service and sacrifice of veterans but also strengthens the bond between Defence and the wider community.

“The Finocchiaro CLP government is proud to back the Veteran Games here in the Top End. By opening Robertson Barracks and hosting these games, we’re creating a space where veterans, serving personnel and their families can come together, compete and celebrate the values of teamwork, resilience and mateship that define our Defence community.”

Commander of the 1st Brigade, Brigadier Doug Pashley, said opening the Robertson Barracks to veterans and spectators is a first for the Australian Defence Force.

“I’m very pleased to be able to support this activity. It’s important to our veterans and it is important to those still serving,” BRIG Pashley said.

“It’ll be a great opportunity for veterans to catch up and enjoy some friendly competition as well as enabling veterans and serving personnel to spend some time together. This is really important for both groups. I look forward to engaging with the participants on the day, sharing perspectives and hopefully, discussing how we can make the event bigger and better next time around.”

City of Darwin Councillor and Games participant, Sam Weston, said the event will have a huge impact on their community.

“As someone who has served and now serves my community in local government, this event means a great deal,” Cr Weston said.

“It’s about rediscovering that team mentality, reconnecting with others who’ve worn the uniform, and showing that service doesn’t end when you leave Defence.”

The event is free to attend. Teams and spectators can register online here.
