The US State Department has approved the sale of US$353 million to the Singaporean government for construction services at Ebbing Air National Guard Base in the US.
The US Congress was notified of the possible sale by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) on 31 October and is in addition to a previously implemented foreign military sales case valued around US$27 million.
The possible sale also includes the construction service, logistics and program support.
“This proposed sale will enhance the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a strategic partner that is an important force for political stability and economic progress in Asia,” according to a statement from the US DSCA.
“The proposed sale will improve Singapore’s capability to maintain operational readiness and interoperability with US and coalition forces. Singapore will have no difficulty absorbing these articles and services into its armed forces.
“The proposed sale of this equipment and support will not alter the basic military balance in the region.
“There are no principal contractors associated with this potential sale. At this time, the US government is not aware of any offset agreement proposed in connection with this potential sale.
“Implementation of this proposed sale will not require the assignment of any additional US government or contractor representatives to Singapore. There will be no adverse impact on US defence readiness as a result of this proposed sale.”
