The US State Department has approved a possible US$105 million foreign military sale to Ukraine for Patriot air defence system upgrades and parts.
The US Congress was notified of the possible foreign military sale by the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) on 18 November.
The sale potentially includes sustainment and services for Patriot air defence systems, upgrades for M901 launchers to M903 configuration, classified and unclassified prescribed load lists and authorised stockage lists for ground support equipment, spare parts and training.
“This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a partner country that is a force for political stability and economic progress in Europe,” according to a statement from DSCA.
“The proposed sale will improve Ukraine’s ability to meet current and future threats by further equipping it to conduct self-defence and regional security missions with a more robust local sustainment capability. Ukraine will have no difficulty absorbing these articles and services into its armed forces.
“The proposed sale of this equipment and support will not alter the basic military balance in the region. There will be no adverse impact on US defence readiness as a result of this proposed sale.
“Implementation of this proposed sale will require the assignment of approximately five additional US government and 15 US contractor representatives to the European Combatant Command for the duration of up to one month to support training and periodic meetings.”
The principal contractors will be RTX Corporation and Lockheed Martin.
