The Indian government has requested Javelin missiles, launchers and Excalibur tactical projectiles under two separate possible foreign military sales approved by the US State Department.

The Indian government has requested Javelin missiles, launchers and Excalibur tactical projectiles under two separate possible foreign military sales approved by the US State Department.

The US Congress was notified of both possible sales by the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) on 19 November.

The first potential US$45.7 million sale includes:

  • 100 FGM-148 Javelin rounds.
  • A Javelin FGM-148 missile.
  • 25 Javelin Lightweight Command Launch Units or Javelin Block 1 Command Launch Units.
  • Javelin LwCLU or CLU Basic Skills Trainers and missile simulation rounds.
  • Interactive electronic technical manuals and Javelin operator manuals.
  • Spare parts and Block 1 CLU refurbishment services.

“This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by helping to strengthen the US–Indian strategic relationship and to improve the security of a major defence partner which continues to be an important force for political stability, peace and economic progress in the Indo-Pacific and south Asia regions,” according to the US DSCA.

“The proposed sale will improve India’s capability to meet current and future threats, strengthen its homeland defence and deter regional threats. India will have no difficulty absorbing these articles and services into its armed forces.

“The proposed sale of this equipment and support will not alter the basic military balance in the region. Implementation of this proposed sale will not require the assignment of any additional US government or contractor representatives to India. There will be no adverse impact on US defence readiness as a result of this proposed sale.”

The principal contractors are expected to be RTX Corporation/Lockheed Martin Javelin Joint Venture.

The second possible US$47.1 million foreign military sale to India, also approved by the US State Department, includes:

  • 216 M982A1 Excalibur tactical projectiles.
  • Portable Electronic Fire Control Systems with improved platform integration kit.
  • Primers, propellant charges, repair and return services.

“The proposed sale will improve India’s capability to meet current and future threats by providing precision capability equipment, which will increase first strike accuracy in its brigades. India will have no difficulty absorbing these articles and services into its armed forces,” according to the US DSCA.

The principal contractor is expected to be RTX Corporation.
