The government of Denmark has signed an air defence delivery contract for National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems.
The €500 million contract is envisioned to provide the country with the latest technology and the most modern and advanced air defence capability available internationally.
The NASAMS system consists of Raytheon’s radar and advanced missile variants, as well as Kongsberg’s Fire Distribution Center and multi-missile launchers.
NASAMS can employ a mix of missiles, including AMRAAM-Extended Range and AIM-9X Sidewinder for longer and shorter-range capability.
“With this procurement, Denmark will significantly enhance the country’s operational capabilities and the ability to effectively combat modern air threats and furthermore strengthen the overall NASAMS air defence presence in the Nordic region,” said Eirik Lie, Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace president.
NASAMS’ modularity and open architecture is expected to enable the continuous introduction of new technology and ensure that the system can adapt to new threats and missions throughout its lifetime.
The systems are expected to cover a wide range of air defence missions and growth potential for long-range air defence and anti-tactical ballistic missiles.
With this procurement, Denmark becomes the 14th NASAMS user nation and the eighth nation in NATO.
“The Danish selection underscores NASAMS’ position as the world-leading mobile medium-range integrated air defence solution for NATO allies,” said Kjetil R Myhra, Kongsberg Division Defence Systems executive vice president.
