The Australian Army is set to modernise its heavy transport capability with the introduction of new Kenworth and Mack prime movers, featuring advanced safety and efficiency technologies.

The first 15 vehicles are entering service this month, with a total of 30 scheduled for rollout by mid-2026.

These new vehicles will supplement the existing heavy transport fleet, including HX81 models and commercial prime movers, offering greater flexibility across Defence’s green and white fleet trailers.

Designed for long-distance line haul, the prime movers are capable of transporting critical assets such as armoured fighting vehicles and the M1110 joint assault bridge.

Staff Officer Grade 1 Land Mobility Lieutenant Colonel Zak Looker said the safety features are the key success of these new vehicles, which will aid the Army in transportation activities.

“Our drivers will benefit from modern technology and improved comfort, making operations safer and more efficient,” LTCOL Looker said.

“The introduction of these vehicles is a key step in modernising Defence’s heavy transport capability and ensuring we can move critical assets when and where they’re needed.”

The vehicles incorporate updated collision mitigation, braking technology, driver assist systems and digitised fleet management, all designed to improve operational efficiency while reducing risks on the road. They are also fuel-efficient, further supporting the Army’s operational sustainability.

“These prime movers provide flexibility that enhances our operational readiness,” Looker said.

A total $9.45 million from the budget for this financial year assisted the rollout.
