Northrop Grumman has begun production for their Mk44 Stretch Bushmaster Chain Guns, which are set to be delivered to the US Marine Corps’ Amphibious Combat Vehicles.
The Mk44S is a medium-calibre cannon that delivers greater range, reliability and battlefield success. It fires NATO-standard 30x173mm ammunition and is designed to work with Northrop Grumman’s advanced programmable munitions.
“The Mk44 Bushmaster Chain Gun delivers unmatched firepower and reliability in even the most unforgiving conditions,” said Dave Fine, Northrop Grumman vice president armament systems business unit.
“By integrating this proven capability into the Amphibious Combat Vehicle program, we’re equipping Marines with the tools they need to dominate the battlefield and stay ahead of evolving threats.”
The gun further has the capacity to be upgraded from 30mm to 40mm through a straightforward barrel change without major component swaps. This consequently offers a pathway to improving accuracy and effectiveness for operators without replacing an entire weapons system.
Northrop’s website said the weapon is highly effective, and “when paired with our exceptional training services, certified accessories, and OEM warranties, delivers best-in-class value and a guarantee of optimal performance”.
Through sustained investment in technology, infrastructure and its workforce, Northrop said it supports current and future national security needs while delivering advanced defence capabilities.
The Mk44 is currently in production in Mesa, Arizona, Northrop Grumman’s major manufacturing hub.
