The Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations (AFUO) has recognised the death of former Australian Defence Force soldier Russell Allan Wilson, reportedly killed while fighting as a volunteer in Ukraine.
Wilson was reportedly killed while conducting a counter-attack operation with the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Donetsk region of Ukraine on 12 December last year.
Information published online allege that Wilson was killed in action on 12 December and gave his life to protect others.
Media reports have speculated that Russell, possibly from Gosford in NSW, originally arrived in Ukraine as a volunteer in 2023 after previously service with the Australian Defence Force.
“The Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations is deeply saddened by the loss of Russell Allan Wilson, a courageous Australian who has been reported killed while fighting in Ukraine,” according to a public statement from the AFUO.
“It is understood that Russell stood shoulder to shoulder with Ukrainians on the front lines of Donetsk, one of the most dangerous battlegrounds in Russia’s war against Ukraine, for several years.
“Russell made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of Ukraine’s freedom. Russell’s bravery, unwavering commitment and relentless courage in defending the innocent will never be forgotten.
“Russell embodied the very best of the Australian spirit: standing up for what is right, even at the greatest personal cost.
“To Russell’s family and loved ones; your grief is shared by Australian–Ukrainians and Ukrainians around the world. Russell’s sacrifice is now forever woven into Ukraine’s story of resistance and resilience. We will remember him. Eternal memory. Glory to the heroes.”
It’s understood that the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is confirming the circumstances surrounding the death of Wilson.
