Israeli diplomat and historian Dr Hillel Newman has been announced as the new ambassador of Israel to Australia.

Israeli diplomat and historian Dr Hillel Newman has been announced as the new ambassador of Israel to Australia.

Newman has previously served as ambassador to Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, a former consul-general of Israel to the Pacific Southwest, and former client relations manager for a corporate business entity.

Earlier this year, the new ambassador presented his credentials to Australian Governor-General Sam Mostyn at Government House in Canberra, as well as taking part in an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander traditional smoking ceremony at Government House.

“We are pleased to introduce the new ambassador of Israel to Australia. Welcome ambassador Hillel Newman,” according to a public statement from the embassy of Israel in Australia.

“With a distinguished diplomatic career and deep commitment to strengthening bilateral ties, ambassador Newman begins this new chapter focused on advancing the strong partnership between Israel and Australia.”

Newman holds a PhD in Jewish history and served as a professor of Jewish history, teaching graduate courses at Bar Ilan University and Boston University. He has authored and published a book on Jewish sectarianism during the Hellenistic and Roman period as well as serving as a key lecturer on Judaism in the NATO Defense College.
