Australia’s 2026 National Defence Strategy has confirmed plans to fund and introduce a medium-range, ground-based air defence system for defeating advanced aircraft and missiles.
The information was released under the government's multibillion-dollar 2026 National Defence Strategy and a revamped Integrated Investment Program.
“(Australia will) accelerate the introduction of integrated air and missile defence capabilities to enhance protection against advanced aircraft and missiles. This includes new investment in a medium-range, ground-based air defence system, with opportunities for Australian defence industry involvement,” according to the documents.
“Introduction of a medium-range ground-based active missile defence capability (will occur) through additional investment in multi-domain missile launchers and munitions integrated with command and control systems.
“This program will commence as a priority from 2026, with investment to build a resilient, networked capability that will form a core component of the National Integrated Air and Missile Defence System.
“Additional opportunities to further increase our air and missile defence capabilities in the short term will also be explored.”
In wider 2026 National Defence Strategy news, the government is committing a $425 billion over the next decade to overhaul the Australian Defence Force. To get there, the government is injecting an extra $14 billion over the next four years and $53 billion over the decade. This funding surge will see Australia’s Defence spending climb to 3 per cent of gross domestic product by 2033.
