Babcock has announced a new program that is set to boost small and medium-sized enterprises’ (SME) commercial pathways into Defence.
The pilot program seeks to assist SMEs to increase their opportunities to engage with Defence and export programs through business training and guidance methods, operated by World Commerce and Contracting.
The 12-month program will involve a range of learning modules that allow businesses to flourish in critical industries, including business ethic, managing contracts and commercial awareness.
“SMEs play a vital role in delivering projects of national significance now and in the years and decades to come,” said Kellie Jenkins, Babcock Australasia’s global supply manager.
“Babcock’s pilot program will supercharge their commercial and business knowledge to help give them the tools, insights and connections they need to compete and thrive in the Defence industry.
“We work closely with more than 700 Australian organisations nationwide, leveraging their expertise to meet national Defence requirements while also supporting their ability to innovate, grow and create more jobs in their local communities.
“By helping to uplift SME commercial capability, we’re supporting the growth of a supply chain that is agile, competitive and ready to support Australia’s Defence needs into the future.”
Currently, Babcock’s engagement in the Global Supply Chain Program is enabling the commercial training program to be made available to nine Western Australian SMEs who have been critical examples of sovereign defence innovation.
Babcock is extending its support beyond SME funding, backing two roles within the Defence Teaming Centre to boost the organisation’s capacity to support industry stakeholders.
Earlier this year, Babcock rolled out the first national Defence Industry Engagement Series, linking suppliers with current and emerging opportunities across Townsville, Brisbane, Adelaide and Henderson in Western Australia.
The pilot program is part of Babcock’s broader push to strengthen sovereign defence capability and bring more SMEs into the sector through local and export opportunities.
