Canberra-based healthcare solutions provider Aspen Medical is working alongside healthcare professionals and researchers in Lviv, Ukraine, to advance understanding of emerging treatments for post-traumatic stress disorder and other trauma-related conditions affecting military personnel and veterans.

The collaboration is exploring the use of stellate ganglion block, including its application alongside ketamine-based therapies, as a potential treatment pathway for individuals experiencing the effects of combat-related trauma.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and related mental health conditions continue to affect veterans and serving personnel around the world. Aspen Medical’s involvement reflects the company’s long-standing commitment to improving health outcomes for those who have served their countries in complex and demanding environments.

Aspen Medical chief medical officer and Australian Defence Force veteran Dr Katrina Sanders said supporting veteran health remains central to the company’s mission.

“Many of our leadership team and workforce have military backgrounds. We understand the challenges veterans can face and we are committed to supporting initiatives that have the potential to improve lives and strengthen long-term wellbeing,” Dr Sanders said.

The work in Lviv brings together international expertise to better understand how innovative treatment approaches may support recovery from trauma and improve the quality of life for veterans and others affected by conflict.

Aspen Medical has supported healthcare initiatives in Ukraine since 2022, working with Ukrainian and international partners to strengthen trauma care, rehabilitation and medical education.

In addition to the latest work around PTSD, the company’s programs have included combat casualty care research, advanced trauma surgery training, prosthetics and rehabilitation support and pain management initiatives.

In recognition of this work, Aspen Medical received the International Stability Operations Association’s Global Impact Vanguard Award for its contribution to strengthening healthcare capability in Ukraine.
