Thales Australia has revealed its latest iteration of the Bushmaster Mulga utility variant at the Eurosatory defence conference in Paris earlier this week.
The new variant, Bushmaster 5.6, has a range of new integrated sensors and systems that can be integrated into existing platforms for optimised efficiency.
Featuring systems that offer counter-drone mechanisms, remote weapons and electronic warfare measures, the new variant has been designed to support a multitude of modern-day combat complexities.
“Already a trusted defender, the Bushmaster 5.6 has been designed to provide greater flexibility for modern missions, particularly in areas like counter-drone operations, sensing, communications and electronic warfare,” said Jeff Connolly, CEO of Thales Australia.
“The Bushmaster has built a global reputation for protection, mobility and reliability – this next generation vehicle demonstrates how the platform continues to evolve in response to changing threats, emerging technologies and customer needs.”
Evolving from existing Bushmaster Mulga variants, the 5.6 version features systems that are more interconnected to support autonomous and crewed operations, as well as laser guided rockets to address “modern and future warfare”.
This variant additionally offers more user-friendly design choices through altered door access and vehicle entry, enhanced digital displays, as well as a left-hand drive to accommodate the global market.
“The new Mulga variant and all next-generation vehicles provide a rugged and adaptable Australian capability,” said Andrew Downes, Thales Australia vice president land.
“It is a next-generation vehicle, ready for export and improved from lessons learned fighting from the combat field.
“It allows customers to adapt the vehicle for different missions while retaining the protection, mobility and reliability that have made Bushmaster successful globally.”
The Australian government recently signed a fresh contract with the manufacturer for the procurement of 290 new units of the next-generation Bushmaster vehicle.
