The US Department of State has approved a potential US$73 million foreign military sale to the Singaporean government for a Common Fire Control System and related equipment.

The possible foreign military sale, announced on 15 June, includes 18 Common Fire Control System upgrade kits for the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System.

Other defence equipment in the possible sale includes technical documentation, spare parts, training, US government and contractor technical support, engineering and logistics support services, field office support and other related elements.

“This proposed sale will enhance the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a strategic partner that is an important force for political stability and economic progress in Asia,” a statement from the US Department of State said.

“The proposed sale will improve Singapore’s capability to meet current and future threats by enhancing and extending its Army’s ability to conduct operations and enable effective training. Singapore will have no difficulty absorbing this training into its armed forces.

“The proposed sale of this equipment and support will not alter the basic military balance in the region. There will be no adverse impact on US defence readiness as a result of this proposed sale.”

The principal contractor will be Lockheed Martin, located in Dallas, Texas.
