Queensland announces new Glock 45 Gen 6 service pistols for all QLD police officers

The equipment is designed to allow officers to respond to dangerous situations

“Labor hampered our police through a decade of under investment, but our Government is backing Queensland Police and supporting them with the tools they need on the frontline,” according to Queensland Minister for Police and Emergency Services Dan Purdie.

“By investing in modern and reliable equipment, police officers can go to work knowing they have what they need to make Queensland safer and protect themselves in high-risk settings.

“Our Government has a laser like focus on restoring safety where you live, which is why we are delivering stronger laws, more police, effective early intervention and rehabilitation.

“We have always said it will take time to reverse a decade of the former Labor Government watering down the laws but we are taking steps in the right direction with police data showing victim numbers are down 9.6 per cent across the state.”

The $14 million investment will deliver more than 14,000 new world-class Austrian firearms to police from the end of 2026, replacing ageing handguns from 1998 and ensuring every officer has modern, reliable equipment to help them respond to dangerous situations and continue making Queensland safer.

Deputy Police Commissioner Mark Kelly said the investment would provide officers with contemporary operational equipment.

“The Queensland Police Service is the first policing jurisdiction in the country to upgrade its entire handgun fleet to the modern 9mm Glock 45 Generation 6,” Deputy Commissioner Kelly said.

“For our police, this means improved handling, control and accuracy, giving officers greater confidence in a high-risk operational environment.

“While the use of force is always a last resort, it is critical for our police to have the best available equipment to protect the community and safely resolve situations.”

The Queensland Government’s investment follows more than $147.9 million already delivered for critical frontline equipment including 6,546 new Taser 10s, 7,826 bodyworn cameras to strengthen evidence gathering and officer accountability, 12,500 Tactical First Aid Kits to all frontline police across the State, with new kits supplied to recruits and resupply readily available for all police officers and 1,400 tyre deflation devices to help safely stop dangerous offenders.

In a recruitment milestone, Queensland Police Service has more than 13,000 sworn officers for the first time in the state’s history.
