Collins Aerospace has secured a contract worth up to US$472 million ($669.3 million) from the US Army to support the modernisation and sustainment of its CH-47 Chinook helicopter fleet.

The agreement will provide engineering services for avionics upgrades designed to integrate new capabilities more efficiently, address ageing and obsolete components and strengthen the Chinook’s avionics architecture. The work is intended to keep the Army’s long-serving heavy-lift helicopter fleet operationally relevant as its missions and operating environment continue to evolve.

 
 

Collins said the upgraded avionics architecture will provide greater flexibility for integrating new technologies while improving the fleet’s ability to maintain mission readiness.

“Collins equips the Chinook with advanced avionics that integrates communication, navigation and mission subsystems into a flexible, interoperable cockpit built for today’s operational demands,” said Jenny Miller, vice president and general manager of Vision and Sensing Systems at Collins Aerospace.

“Our longstanding avionics partnership with the US Army ensures the fleet continuously evolves to support the warfighter and meet future operational demands.”

The contract forms part of the Army’s broader effort to extend the operational utility of the CH-47, one of the world’s most widely used heavy-lift military helicopters.

Rather than relying on a single major redesign, the approach focuses on progressively upgrading the aircraft’s avionics architecture to accommodate new capabilities and mitigate obsolescence.

This is increasingly important for military aircraft with long service lives, where rapidly evolving communications, navigation, mission systems and digital technologies can outpace the electronics originally installed in the platform.

For the Chinook, an adaptable avionics architecture can also help simplify the integration of future systems while reducing the disruption associated with fleet-wide modernisation.

Collins has extensive experience supporting US Army helicopter fleets and has previously delivered avionics modernisation solutions for the Black Hawk. Its Mosarc modular open systems architecture, for example, is designed to allow new avionics technologies to be integrated more rapidly while reducing life cycle sustainment costs.

The approach reflects a broader shift across US military aviation towards modular open architectures, allowing ageing platforms to receive new capabilities without requiring entirely new aircraft.

The Chinook remains a critical heavy-lift capability for the US Army, supporting troop transport, logistics, humanitarian assistance and a range of other missions.

Maintaining the fleet’s relevance is particularly important as the Army prepares to operate in increasingly contested environments, where resilient communications, navigation and mission systems are critical to aircraft survivability and effectiveness.

The contract also highlights the importance of sustainment and modernisation alongside the development of new-generation military aircraft.

While the US Army is progressing next-generation rotorcraft programs, including the MV-75 Future Long-Range Assault Aircraft, established platforms such as the Chinook will continue to provide essential capability for years to come.

Collins’ work on the CH-47 therefore represents a dual-track modernisation approach: developing next-generation aircraft while ensuring proven platforms can continue incorporating emerging technologies throughout their service lives.

The latest contract reinforces Collins Aerospace’s longstanding role in the Chinook program and provides the US Army with a pathway to progressively modernise the fleet’s avionics while maintaining operational readiness.
