Northrop Grumman tapped for US Army, Navy radar upgrade

The global defence prime has secured a contract to upgrade the US military’s radar warning receiver capability.

The global defence prime has secured a contract to upgrade the US military’s radar warning receiver capability.

Northrop Grumman Corporation has been awarded a $91 million contract for the additional production of AN/APR-39D(V)2 digital radar warning receivers (RWR) for the US Army and Navy.

The small, lightweight system has been designed to protect rotary and fixed wing aircraft from modern radio frequency (RF) threats, including radar-guided missiles and anti-aircraft artillery.

The fully-digital, multichannel APR-39D(V)2 RWR monitors a 360-degree spherical coverage area to detect threats and determine their identity, bearing and lethality.

The system can automatically initiate optimal defensive measures, and also has an immediate growth capability for RF countermeasures.

The AN/APR-39D(V)2 is planned for integration on the Bell AH-1Z Viper, the Boeing AH-64E Apache, the Airborne Reconnaissance Low (ARL-E), the Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey (MV-22), the Bell UH-1Y Venon, and the Sikorsky CH-53K King Stallion.

Ryan Tintner, vice president, navigation, targeting and survivability at Northrop Grumman, said the capability has become increasingly important in the modern defence.

“As the radio frequency threat grows worldwide, the protection the AN/APR-39D(V)2 provides has become essential for our warfighters and international partners,” he said.

The system is underpinned by Northrop Grumman’s electronic warfare architecture, which currently services thousands of aircraft around the world.
