Bundeswehr to onboard Rafael Active Protection System

Following approval by the Bundestag, the Bundeswehr this week agreed to equip a company of Leopards with Rafael’s Trophy Active Protection System (APS).

The German Ministry of Defence this week confirmed that a company of the Bundeswehr’s Leopard 2 MBT will be equipped with Rafael’s Trophy APS.

Following the Bundestag’s recent approval of the project, Rafael will work alongside the Leopard’s manufacturer, Krauss-Maffei Wegmann, to onboard the APS while providing spare parts and training. The project is expected to run over the course of several years.

“Germany is joining an exclusive group of advanced tier-1 nations who have chosen Trophy APS to protect their troops and assets from the ever-increasing threat of anti-armour warfare,” Dr Ran Gozali, EVP and head of the land and naval division at Rafael, said.

Rafael’s Trophy APS is designed to provide tanks with protection against rocket and missile attacks by engaging the threat, while also locating the source of the attack.

The APS has been rolled out across the IDF’s Merkava tanks since 2011 and has accrued approximately 1 million operating hours.

In January, Rafael announced the completed rollout of its Trophy APS on the US Army’s Abram tanks.
