The 10th Light Horse Regiment, famed for an array of Battle Honours during the First World War, was re-raised in a historic ceremony in Perth last weekend.
The ceremony was held 107 years after the outbreak of fighting in the First World War, which saw members of the Regiment honoured with a Victoria Cross and three Distinguished Service Orders.
Throughout the war, the Regiment saw combat across the near and Middle East including Gallipoli, Beersheba and Damascus.
Assistant Minister for Defence Andrew Hastie outlined that the modern 10th Light Horse will be re-raised with new cutting-edge capabilities to ensure the defence of Australia’s west coast.
“Western Australia is at the forward edge of the Australian Army’s modernisation program. Our troops must be ‘Future Ready’. We are growing the 13th Brigade cavalry scout capability by equipping it with 10 cutting edge, Aussie-made Hawkei Protected Mobility Vehicles,” Assistant Minster Hastie said.
According to Defence, it is expected that the 10th Light Horse will have 170 serving members by 2022.
“The 10th Light Horse Regiment is a distinguished army unit. Western Australians are proud of its service record and rightly welcome its restoration to full strength,” Assistant Minister Hastie continued.
“While the 10th Light Horse’s traditional role has been cavalry operations — and will remain so — modern capability and platforms will also enable them to help regional and local communities during natural disasters and other crises."
