US Army selects SIG Sauer for Next Generation Squad Weapon program

The contract, scheduled to last for 10 years, is expected to see the US Army replace the M4 carbine and M249 Squad Automatic Weapon with the to-be-type-classified SIG Sauer M5 and M250 pending tests.

The contract, scheduled to last for 10 years, is expected to see the US Army replace the M4 carbine and M249 Squad Automatic Weapon with the to-be-type-classified SIG Sauer M5 and M250 pending tests.

According to the US Army, the initial order is valued at $20.4 million for weapons and ammunition which will then undergo a series of tests.

“Both weapons provide significant capability improvements in accuracy, range and overall lethality. They are lightweight, fire more lethal ammunition, mitigate recoil, provide improved barrel performance, and include integrated muzzle sound and flash reduction,” the US Army said in a release.

The team at Aquaterro, the exclusive partner of SIG Sauer for the Department of Defence’s LAND 159 program in Australia, welcomed the announcement from the United States.

“The selection of SIG Sauer by the United States Department of Defense (sic) to supply the Next Generation Squad Weapon and the XM5 and XM250 is both historic and transformative, signifying a generational shift in small arms technology,” founder and chief executive officer at Aquaterro Graeme Bulte said.

“Aquaterro is SIG Sauer’s exclusive partner for the Australian Department of Defence’s Land 159 program, and provider of SIG weapon systems across multiple Australian and New Zealand agencies. Aquaterro welcomes this achievement and what it may mean for Australian soldiers into the future.”

The company confirmed that it is looking forward to offering the SIG Sauer as a solution to the Department of Defence under LAND 159 Tranche 2.

“SIG has demonstrated itself to be a true partner to Aquaterro, and extremely supportive of the Australian soldier. Aquaterro has demonstrated its capability and commitment to providing local technology transfer, advanced manufacturing, assembly, armoury, and technical systems support,” he continued.

“Providing the absolute best of equipment to Australians on the front line is, and remains, Aquaterro’s primary mission.”
