Commonwealth delivers Guardian Class vessel to Kiribati

The island nation has received the Austal-built patrol boat at a formal ceremony on Friday.

Rear Admiral Wendy Malcolm, CSM, of the Royal Australian Navy has presided over a handover ceremony, which involved the delivery of an Austal-built Guardian Class patrol boat to the Republic of Kiribati.

The ceremony, held at Henderson Shipyard in Western Australia, was also attended by federal member for Stirling Vince Connelly, Honorary Consul General for Kiribati Paul Wenham, and the new commanding officer of RKS Teanoai II Superintendent Tom Redfern.

The ceremony marked the 11th official handover of a Guardian Class patrol boat under the Pacific Maritime Security Program.

In total, 21 patrol boats will be delivered to12 Pacific island countries and Timor-Leste.

Last month, the Commonwealth delivered the second of two patrol boats, RSIPV Taro, to the Solomon Islands, with the first vessel, RSIPV Gizo, handed over in November 2019.
