German naval ship and submarine builder thyssenkrupp Marine Systems and Singapore’s Defence Science and Technology Agency signed a contract for the construction of two additional Type 218SG submarines.
This latest agreement builds on an established partnership between the German shipbuilder and Singapore, bringing the total number of advanced Type 218SG submarines ordered to six.
The vessels are designed for maximum stealth, endurance and advanced combat capability and will further bolster Singapore’s ability to safeguard its maritime interests amid growing regional security challenges.
The new order contributes to thyssenkrupp Marine Systems’ record-breaking order book, which now stands at approximately €16 billion. Despite full order books extending into the 2040s, the company confirmed the Singapore order will be accommodated within its current production capacity in Germany.
Oliver Burkhard, CEO of thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, said the contract reflects both the growing demand for advanced naval assets and the strength of the company’s partnership with Singapore.
“The order expansion underscores the generally positive market situation in naval shipbuilding and gives us the opportunity to further expand our very well-filled order book,” Burkhard said.
“We are also proud that Singapore has once again placed its trust in us, as our partnership goes far beyond the production of submarines. We feel deeply connected to the country and contribute to the security and defence capabilities of our customer’s country with our products.”
The Type 218SG submarines are tailored to meet Singapore’s exacting operational requirements, incorporating an air-independent propulsion system that allows for extended submerged endurance and a low acoustic signature for enhanced stealth.
Singapore’s naval modernisation program, launched over the past decade, reflects the city-state’s focus on high-tech, compact and effective military capabilities. With limited manpower but vast maritime interests, the Republic of Singapore Navy has steadily transitioned from older, refurbished submarines to a new fleet built specifically for its strategic environment. The Type 218SG Class – named Invincible, Impeccable, Illustrious, Inimitable, and now joined by two yet-to-be-named additions – symbolises this shift towards a future-ready naval force.
In recent years, Singapore has also invested in new multi-role combat vessels, unmanned surface systems and upgraded naval bases, reflecting a holistic approach to maritime defence.
The announcement follows several major wins for thyssenkrupp Marine Systems in late 2024, including contracts for four additional Type 212CD submarines for the German Navy, the new Polarstern research icebreaker, and the development of the next-generation F127 frigates.
