The United Kingdom has reached a significant milestone in its naval shipbuilding program with the unveiling of HMS Venturer, the first of the Type 31 frigates, at Babcock’s Rosyth shipyard in Scotland.

The United Kingdom has reached a significant milestone in its naval shipbuilding program with the unveiling of HMS Venturer, the first of the Type 31 frigates, at Babcock’s Rosyth shipyard in Scotland.

The unveiling marked the transition from construction to the final stages of preparation for the vessel’s float-off into the River Forth in the coming weeks. HMS Venturer is a 5,700-tonne, 139-metre warship and was carefully rolled out of the state-of-the-art build hall using self-propelled modular transporters, with the Babcock team now preparing it for the next phase of outfitting and systems integration.

Part of a rapid and ambitious national shipbuilding program, the Type 31 fleet will see all five frigates built within a decade of the initial contract award. The program is now well into its multi-ship build phase, with three vessels currently under construction.

The Type 31 Class is expected to form a core element of the Royal Navy’s future surface fleet. The design has already been exported to Indonesia and Poland, bolstering the interoperability of allied navies.

Sir Nick Hine, chief executive of Babcock’s marine sector, said the unveiling was a landmark moment for British naval ambition. “For the first time, we’re seeing HMS Venturer emerge from the build hall – a powerful symbol of UK naval ambition and sovereign capability.”

“It marks another major milestone in a standout week for British shipbuilding, at a time when global uncertainty demands even greater defence capability. Right here in Scotland, we are building five complex warships in a single yard, in just a decade – true world-class performance,” Hine added.

Minister for Armed Forces, Luke Pollard MP, said the project reflected the UK government’s focus on strengthening security and economic growth. “This government is committed to making Britain secure at home and strong abroad. HMS Venturer will be at the heart of the Royal Navy fleet, deterring aggression and supporting our Armed Forces,” he said. “She also represents the best of Britain’s world-class shipbuilding heritage. Today’s significant milestone shows this government’s commitment to grow the economy by supporting thousands of jobs in Scotland and across the UK.”

Steve Ranyard, Type 31 team leader at defence equipment and support, highlighted the program’s importance. “Seeing HMS Venturer reach this pivotal milestone is a cause for celebration for all those working on the program to make this day a reality,” he said. “The rollout of HMS Venturer paves the way for the success of the entire fleet of the Royal Navy’s Type 31 frigates. Once complete, they will be at the forefront of deterring aggression and maintaining the security and prosperity of our nation and our allies.”

The Type 31 frigate, also known as the Inspiration Class, represents the UK’s latest class of general purpose warships designed to enhance naval capability and export potential. Built by Babcock International at Rosyth in Scotland, the Type 31 is based on the Arrowhead 140 design, which itself is an evolution of the Iver Huitfeldt Class used by the Royal Danish Navy.

The frigates are capable of speeds over 28 knots and offer a range of up to 9,000 nautical miles. Each vessel will be equipped with a BAE Systems Mk45 5-inch gun, Sea Ceptor surface-to-air missiles, anti-ship missiles and facilities for deploying helicopters, boats and unmanned systems. This combination allows them to undertake a wide range of missions, from maritime security and escort duties to humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.

Commodore Steve Roberts, Type 31 senior responsible owner, said the unveiling demonstrated progress, saying, “Seeing HMS Venturer, the first of the Type 31 Inspiration Class, unveiled is a proud moment not just for the Royal Navy and her crew, but all the organisations in Defence that have contributed to this key milestone. This is the first of many exciting stages for the Type 31 program with now three of the five ships progressing in build. I look forward with anticipation to the moment when we will see HMS Venturer enter the water in the very near future.”

Commander Chris Cozens, Senior Naval Officer of HMS Venturer, said the ship’s company had witnessed the ship’s growth from the keel up. “This will be the first time Babcock and the Royal Navy can unveil this next-generation frigate to the public,” he said. “This moment is taking the ship another step closer to where it is needed and contributing to the UK’s security and prosperity.”

The Type 31 program forms a key part of the UK’s National Shipbuilding Strategy, which aims to deliver five ships within a decade of the initial contract. Designed with modularity, affordability and adaptability in mind, the Type 31 provides a flexible and cost-effective complement to the more advanced Type 26 anti-submarine warfare frigates, ensuring the Royal Navy can maintain a global presence in an increasingly complex strategic environment.

The class carries names honouring Royal Navy heritage, with ships including HMS Venturer, HMS Active, HMS Formidable, HMS Bulldog and HMS Campbeltown.

Once HMS Venturer has floated off, she will return to Rosyth for extensive outfitting and systems integration in dock before undergoing sea trials and entering operational service with the Royal Navy.
