Hobart Class guided missile destroyer HMAS Brisbane is conducting the third regional presence deployment of 2025, after the return of HMA Ships Hobart and Sydney earlier this year.

The Royal Australian Navy destroyer left the Port of Townsville in July and is conducting integration training with the United Kingdom Carrier Strike Group this month, before travelling to the Philippines to participate in Exercise Alon 25. The regional presence deployment will conclude in November this year.

In addition, HMAS Brisbane will conduct port visits to the Philippines and Japan, as well as operate alongside regional partners to enhance cooperation and maritime interoperability during the regional presence deployment.

Chief of Joint Operations, Vice Admiral Justin Jones, AO, CSC, RAN, said the deployment reflected the ADF’s longstanding regional partnerships and shared security interests.

“Our regional presence is about demonstrating Australia’s commitment to working closely with partners across the Indo-Pacific,” VADM Jones said.

“By maintaining a consistent and capable presence, we help promote stability, build trust, and contribute to a region where the sovereignty of all nations is respected.”

Regional presence deployments involve military visits into the Indo-Pacific region and participation in exercises and cooperative activities with partner nations, reinforcing Australia’s commitment to supporting a secure, stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific.

Chief of Navy, Vice Admiral Mark Hammond, AO, RAN, said the deployment signalled Australia’s operational readiness and commitment to strengthening relationships with regional partners.

“Maritime security is the foundation of our economic security,” VADM Hammond said.

“These deployments are critical to developing shared understanding with our allies and partners as we collectively enhance maritime security in the region.”

Regional presence deployments are a key part of the ADF’s ongoing engagement with the region and highlight Australia’s role as a proactive and reliable security partner.
