Defence company Sparton DeLeon Springs will supply electroacoustic devices and sonobuoys to the Australian Department of Defence under newly announced contracts.
Sparton, acquired by Elbit Systems of America in 2021, confirmed it is now engaged in multiple firm-fixed-price contracts to supply the equipment to Australia as well as the Canadian Department of National Defence and the Indian Ministry of Defence.
The multiple contract awards for sophisticated undersea warfare and anti-submarine warfare solutions are understood to exceed US$34 million. All work to support the contracts will be performed at Sparton’s facility in DeLeon Springs, Florida.
“Sparton is the global leader in designing, developing and producing complex underwater systems that are used to locate submarines,” Sparton president and chief executive officer Donnelly Bohan said.
“Securing contracts from multiple allied nations demonstrates the superiority of our solutions and their globally recognised utility in anti-submarine warfare and undersea warfare efforts.”
The equipment, such as sonobuoys, can be used for transmitting submarine activity in active (emitting sound energy into the water and waiting for a return transmission) and passive modes (listening for sound wave transmissions). In addition, devices have a sleep mode to conserve energy and increase battery life.
Sparton sonobuoys are deployed from the air or directly into the ocean.
