Rohde & Schwarz is set to supply its cutting-edge NAVICS integrated communications system for two new Evolved Cape Class patrol boats being built by Austal for the Australian Border Force.
Under the newly signed agreement, Rohde & Schwarz Australia will be responsible for the delivery, installation, acceptance testing and transition into service of the NAVICS systems. The two vessels are under construction at Austal’s Henderson shipyard in Western Australia and will bolster the Australian Border Force’s (ABF) front-line patrol and enforcement capability.
“This agreement continues our enduring collaboration with Austal on the Evolved Capes, following the successful delivery of eight NAVICS-equipped patrol boats to the Royal Australian Navy – the latest being ADV Cape Hawke, launched on 19 September 2025,” said Charles Nuttall-Smith, head of maritime domain at Rohde & Schwarz Australia.
“NAVICS will transform the ABF’s onboard communications capability by introducing the most modern IP-based multi-level security architecture to their patrol fleet,” he added.
Based on Rohde & Schwarz’s proprietary voice over internet protocol communications switching architecture, NAVICS integrates the company’s world-leading communications technologies with those of key industry partners, providing a secure, multi-domain communications network for maritime operations.
Gareth Evans, managing director of Rohde & Schwarz Australia, highlighted the company’s expanding sovereign capability in complex defence communications integration.
“Our continuing role as communications system integrator (CSI) on both the Evolved Cape Class and the Hunter Class Frigate Program reflects the growing depth of our sovereign design and integration expertise here in Australia,” Evans said.
“The Commonwealth’s decision to select Rohde & Schwarz Australia as CSI for the ABF’s patrol boats is a strong endorsement of our capability and the confidence Defence and Border Force have placed in us.”
Evans also noted that the company’s 40-year presence in Australia had built a robust local workforce and service delivery base. “We’re proud of our record of delivering highly capable, sovereign communications systems across Australia and the wider Indo-Pacific region,” he said.
Brent Carey, head of strategic supply chain at Austal Defence Australia, said the partnership continues to deliver operational benefits across multiple programs.
“Our long-standing relationship with Rohde & Schwarz Australia enhances our ability to provide advanced tactical navigation and communications systems. Their proven expertise ensures our clients receive platforms that perform to the highest standards,” Carey said.
“We look forward to continuing this collaboration as we deliver enhanced capability for the Australian Border Force and Defence.”
