HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding has announced the successful trials of a new Ford Class aircraft carrier.
The successful completion of builder’s sea trials by the John F Kennedy CVN 79 carrier vessel marks a significant step forward for the US Navy’s next generation of aircraft carriers.
The trials, which were conducted off the Virginia coast, signify the second of the Gerald R Ford Class nuclear-powered aircraft carriers to have operated at sea.
Navy personnel and engineers tested and assessed the performance, operational efficiency and effectiveness of the vessel.
“Taking Kennedy to sea is a testament to the grit and determination of the world’s finest shipbuilders,” said Derek Murphy, NNS vice president of new construction aircraft carrier programs.
“Our nation is depending on us to deliver these critical assets that will protect freedom around the world and we’re proud to see CVN 79 take another step toward joining the fleet.”
As the second ship of the Ford Class, CVN 79, HII said the vessel propels the US Navy’s nuclear-powered vessels program, while introducing design changes aimed at operating more efficiently with fewer personnel.
Central to the class are a new nuclear power plant and greater electrical generation capacity to support advanced systems.
