Famous Oscar-winning actor Russel Crowe has been appointed an honorary commander in the Royal Australian Navy during a ceremony held at Fleet Base East in Sydney.
Crowe, who was born in New Zealand and lived in Australia, was bestowed the honorary rank during a special ceremony on the quarter deck of DDG HMAS Sydney V on 25 February.
Crowe reportedly joins James Bond frontman Daniel Craig, who was appointed an honorary commander in the British Royal Navy in 2021.
“Congratulations to Russell Crowe who was appointed an honorary commander in the Royal Australian Navy,” Australian Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Personnel Matt Keogh said.
“A great reminder that if you’re an Australian permanent resident from New Zealand living in Australia, you can now apply join our Australian Defence Force.”
The Chief of Navy, Vice Admiral Mark Hammond, recognised the famous Hollywood actor for his enduring advocacy for the Royal Australian Navy and his contribution to public understanding through storytelling and support to the Defence community.
In addition, Crowe’s contributions have reportedly been consistent with Navy values, such as service, courage, respect, integrity and excellence.
“It was a privilege to appoint Russell Crowe an honorary commander in the Royal Australian Navy,” VADM Hammond said.
“It is an honour to recognise an individual who has meaningfully reinforced the Navy’s relationship with the Australian people.
“Russell’s contributions across film, sport and public advocacy have honoured Navy’s story with authenticity and lasting commitment.”
