The US Navy has set up a new Naval Support Activity in Perth to enhance multinational support ahead of AUKUS.
The Naval Support Activity (NSA) will see services, programs and operational support being provided to US service people as well as American defence industry workers in the area who are assigned to work in Submarine Rotational Force - West (SRF-West).
“Establishment of NSA Stirling with our AUKUS partners demonstrates our command mission to support the fleet, warfighter, and family,” said US Vice Admiral Scott Gray, Commander, Navy Installations Command.
“By providing essential services to US personnel and their families, NSA Stirling will enhance rotational submarine force readiness.”
As part of the NSA’s services, US workers in the region will be provided with access to housing, healthcare and childcare, as well as connection to community and recreation opportunities.
The NSA in Western Australia has been in the works since October 2024, with lead of the activity, commander of Navy Region Japan, Rear Admiral Ian Johnson, saying the Navy is still in the “early stages of establishing NSA Stirling”.
“While there is still much work ahead, we are confident in our ability to accomplish this task through strong collaboration with our AUKUS partners.”
SRF-West is a rotational presence mission that will see US and UK representatives set up at naval base HMAS Stirling to ensure Australia is ready to establish “sovereign readiness” in operating and maintaining nuclear-powered submarines.
