HMAS Sydney has officially departed on its third regional presence deployment for the year.
The Hobart Class frigate departed from Fleet Base East on Tuesday morning to begin the regional presence deployment (RPD), starting with allies from the United States and Indo-Pacific region as a part of Exercise Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC).
RIMPAC will be the start of HMAS Sydney’s engagement and training activities within the region, which Chief of Joint Operations, Vice Admiral Justin Jones saying this will “enhance Australia’s awareness of maritime activities across the Indo-Pacific”.
“Australia has a longstanding commitment to working with allies and partners throughout our region, and HMAS Sydney’s crew will proudly continue that.
“This cooperation is essential to uphold the collective security of the Indo-Pacific, ensuring our region remains peaceful, stable and prosperous.”
Primarily used in air, surface and undersea warfare and surveillance, HMAS Sydney can carry approximately 180 crew members and an embarked MH-60R Seahawk helicopter.
RPDs are valuable ways that crews can develop their maritime skills and develop stronger connections with allied nations through exercises and collaborative efforts.
“Through exercises like RIMPAC and regional engagements, HMAS Sydney contributes to maintaining a stable, secure and open maritime environment,” said HMAS Sydney Commanding Officer, Commander Ben Weller.
The fifth iteration of the destroyer was commissioned into service in 2020 and features multiple radar systems and long-range missiles to support its efforts.
