A new submarine training simulator has opened for Royal Australian Navy officers to enhance their expertise in undersea warfare.

The Submarine Training and Systems Centre (STSC) at HMAS Stirling naval base in Western Australia is expected to provide submariners with effective training and increase operational readiness.

The simulator, delivered by Kongsberg, is said to create a highly realistic training environment by creating a replicated submarine bridge that will provide surface training capabilities.

Defence said this is expected to enhance complex training scenario responses and will allow crews to act out emergency situations in a thought-out and controlled environment, so that in a real emergency, a plethora of scenarios have already been worked through.

“The simulator represents a significant advancement in the submarine warfare officer training curriculum,” said Captain Robin Dainty, Submarines Director Training Authority.

“With the state-of-the-art capability enabling more realistic and effective preparation of our future surfaced officers of the watch and command teams.

“Ultimately, it strengthens our mission to develop safe and capable submariners.

“The realism of this new simulator really stands out straight away.”

The STSC additionally provides submariners with “pause, reset and repeat” initiatives, as well as pre-work-up training exercises.

These additional skills are expected to refine more intricate and collaborative submariner techniques.

“The realism of this new simulator really stands out straight away,” said Submarine Warfare Officer Lieutenant Benedict.

“It helps build confidence in a safe and controlled environment, before stepping onto a real bridge at sea.”
