L3Harris Technologies has been awarded a competitive contract to deliver battery monitoring systems in the production of Virginia and Columbia Class submarines for the US Navy.
Awarded by General Dynamics Electric Boat (GDEB), the contract is an important aspect of the development of US naval capabilities and the shipbuilding industry.
L3Harris’ battery monitoring systems have been developed to support subsea operations that require essential tracking on the working health of critical batteries.
“These systems directly impact operational capability and crew safety,” said Nino DiCosmo, president of maritime, space and mission systems at L3Harris.
“This contract reflects our commitment to delivering reliable solutions that support two of the service’s highest-priority submarine platforms that serve as the backbone of America's strategic deterrence.”
Last week, GDEB received a wider “historic investment in maritime modernisation and supremacy” from the US Department of War.
The five-ship contract modification will see the company construct five Columbia Class submarines, as well as a nine-ship contract to build Virginia Class submarines which will also be delivered to HII-Newport News Shipbuilding.
“These important contract modifications provide Electric Boat and our suppliers with the demand certainty we need to continue investing in capacity and hiring the workforce necessary to ensure we deliver these important national security assets on schedule,” said Mark Rayha, president of GDEB.
Altogether, the DOW awarded GDEB US$29.5 billion for the Columbia Class submarines and US$42.1 billion for the Virginia Class submarines.
