NATO has reported an incident involving Canadian warship HMCS Fredericton in the early hours of Thursday, 18 November.

While at sea off the coast of Norway, a fire broke out onboard the vessel, currently supporting Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 (SNMG1).

The ship’s crew extinguished the fire immediately upon discovery, with no injuries reported.

HMCS Fredericton is now en route to a nearby Norwegian port for urgent repairs.

Other NATO warships deployed in the vicinity assisted the vessel, including crew deployed with Standing Naval Maritime Group 1 and the Norwegian Coast Guard.

SNMG1 will continue its mission, and is expected to participate in the Norwegian Flotex Silver 21 Exercise.

This was the latest incident involving deployed Western forces in a matter of days.

The UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) recently confirmed reports a F-35B Lightning II has crashed in the Mediterranean Sea during “routine flying operations” by aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth.

A British F-35 pilot ejected from the aircraft after experiencing technical issues immediately after take-off.

According to the MOD, the pilot has been safely returned to the ship, with an investigation now underway to identify the cause of the incident.

In a statement, the MOD said it would be “inappropriate to comment further” until additional information is gathered.

The Royal Navy has reportedly deployed vessels to recover debris from the fighter jet.

The aircraft is among 18 fifth-generation F-35B jets — operated by joint RAF and Royal Navy 617 squadron, and the US Marine Corps — deployed aboard HMS Queen Elizabeth for seven-month deployment, which commenced in May.
