The prime has secured a $115 million contract to bolster aircraft defences against surface-to-air missile strikes.

The US Navy has awarded Northrop Grumman a US$115 million ($151 million) production contract for US Department of the Navy’s Large Aircraft Infrared Countermeasures (DoN LAIRCM) systems.

The company has been tasked with providing support and maintenance for the DoN LAIRCM systems currently installed on both rotary and fixed wing aircraft.

Northrop Grumman's LAIRCM system is designed to provide maximum aircraft and aircrew survivability, defending aircraft against surface-to-air infrared missile threats.

According to Northrop, the system automatically counters advanced infrared missile systems by detecting, tracking and jamming the threat with a high-intensity laser beam.

The company also recently secured additional contracts for the integration, sustainment, and support of the DoN LAIRCM systems, with the firm to integrate the latest version of the system onto US and allied aircraft.

“The DoN LAIRCM award signifies Naval Air System Command’s continued confidence in Northrop Grumman’s 50 years of expertise in missile warning and infrared countermeasures systems,” Bob Gough, vice president, navigation, targeting and survivability at Northrop Grumman, said.

“We remain fully committed to delivering this life-saving capability to our warfighters.”
