The former Labor MP for the seat of Hunter held senior ministerial roles, including as minister for defence, minister for agriculture, fisheries and forestry, and chief government whip.

During his time in opposition, Fitzgibbon also served as shadow minister for resources, shadow minister for rural and regional Australia, shadow minister for small business and tourism, and shadow assistant treasurer.

He also served as chair of the Joint Standing Committee for foreign affairs, defence and trade.

In his new role at CMAX, Fitzgibbon will be tasked with leveraging his experience to provide clients with corporate strategy and policy advice, while also helping local firms expand their global networks.

“Joel has a unique blend of experience across defence, agriculture, mining and resources, which is critical to our long-term growth vision in these industries,” Christian Taubenschlag, president - CMAX Advisory, said.

Fitzgibbon welcomed the opportunity to help Australian companies achieve their commercial ambitions.

“The dynamic team and positive culture are what have drawn me to join CMAX Advisory,” he said.

“I wanted to work in a private sector firm with strong values, and that helps clients achieve growth in Australian and international markets, and I believe CMAX Advisory is the right fit for me.”

Fitzgibbon joins Neil Hart AM, former deputy chief of Air Force, who has served as special counsel with CMAX Advisory for three years.
