Defence Connect will provide a look at the special partnership between the US and Australia.

Defence Connect will provide a look at the special partnership between the US and Australia.

Australia is the only country whose forces have served together with the US in every major conflict of the past century – including World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War, Afghanistan and Iraq  which began 101 years ago at the Battle of Hamel in France, in July 1918.

The signing of the ANZUS Treaty in 1951 formalised the alliance between Australia and the US that had begun over two decades before in the first World War.

The mutual defence clause of this treaty was invoked by Australia for the first time in 2001, when the US was attacked by terrorists in New York and Washington, and the two countries have been instrumental in the War on Terror.

"The alliance increases Australia's ability to protect itself and its interests by providing access to world-leading defence hardware and technologies, training and combined exercises, as well as vital intelligence capabilities," according to the US embassy website.

"Both countries are committed to working together to help shape international norms to advance vital shared interests in the domains of sea, airspace and outer space, as well as cyber security."
