The Ministry of Defense has previously sent bulletproof vests, helmets, protective masks, protective clothing, small drones, and emergency rations based on the Self-Defense Forces Law.

The country also approved a Ukrainian government request on 18 May to accept delivery of two Ukrainian wounded soldiers for rehabilitation treatment at the Self-Defense Forces Central Hospital in mid-June.

“The Ministry of Defense and the Self-Defense Forces will continue to provide as much support as possible to Ukraine,” a Ministry of Defense spokesperson said.

Japan previously announced it would transport and provide non-lethal supplies such as helmets, protective masks, protective clothing, and small drones to the Ukrainian government on 4 August 2022.

During a recent meeting at the G7 Summit in Japan, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum with Prime Minister of Japan Fumio Kishida.

Both leaders laid flowers at the memorial to the victims of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on 6 August 1945.

“Now is a crucial moment for the fate of peace in Ukraine and for the future of the rules-based world order. It is extremely important that the world has the opportunity to hear Ukraine’s voice in Hiroshima,” President Zelenskyy said.

President Zelenskyy thanked Japan for the $7.6 billion package of financial assistance that was allocated previously and expressed gratitude for the decision to accept wounded Ukrainian servicemen to the Self-Defence Force Central Hospital for treatment and for additional assistance in the form of 100 trucks for the needs of the Armed Forces.

Both leaders discussed the possibility of Japanese investment in the production of hydrogen, lithium batteries, automobiles, and energy equipment, as well as in the construction of overpasses and railway infrastructure.
