The Australian Army has welcomed its new Chief, Lieutenant General Rick Burr, AO, DSC, MVO during a ceremonial parade in Canberra.

LTGEN Burr assumed the role of Chief of Army from the outgoing Lieutenant General Angus Campbell, AO, DSC.

“Lieutenant General Burr is an exceptional officer and I congratulate him as he takes up command of the Australian Army. I am confident our Army is in great hands under his leadership,” LTGEN Campbell said.

LTGEN Burr said he was deeply honoured to assume leadership of the Australian Army.

“Today, as I commence my time as Chief of Army, I start by recognising the ongoing contribution our soldiers make to the security of our nation,” he said.

LTGEN Burr served as the Deputy Chief of Army, and prior to that as Deputy Commanding General US Army-Pacific – the first foreign officer to hold such a position.

In 2011-12 he was commander of the 1st Division and the Deployable Joint Force Headquarters.

His operational commands included the theatre-level multinational command of all Special Forces assigned to the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan in 2008, and command of the Australian Special Forces Task Group in Afghanistan 2002 and Iraq 2003.

“I am honoured to lead the Australian Army; an extraordinary team of Australians. We have a strong foundation, great people and much to be proud of. It is a great time to be an Australian soldier,” LTGEN Burr said.
