One of the three European firms competing for the $35 billion Future Frigates Program is seeking expressions of interest from engineers to work on the SEA 5000 project.
Fincanitieri put the call out last week, writing in its ad: "We're confident our offering is the ideal option for Australia and the Royal Australian Navy."
The ad is seeking engineers from all experience levels, from graduates through to senior management, across the following engineering disciplines:
- Mechanical engineering;
- Structural engineering;
- Naval architecture;
- Outfitting and equipment engineering;
- Electrical engineering;
- Electronic engineering; and
- Systems engineering – including combat systems.
The Italian ship designer has offered its FREMM frigate for its SEA 5000 bid, a design that is already in service with the French and Italian navies.
The ship designer has so far committed to building three cruise ship blocks in Adelaide this year. The blocks will be integrated into Fincantieri cruise ships under construction across the Italian company's network of 20 shipyards throughout the globe. South Australian shipbuilders ASC Shipbuilding, Adelaide Ship Construction International, MG Engineering and Ottoway Engineering have been invited to submit offers for the project.
Along with Fincantieri, BAE Systems and Navantia are also bidding on the SEA 5000 Future Frigate Program, a significant naval program for Australia and a key part of the continuous naval shipbuilding plan. The program will be responsible for developing the next generation of frigates for the Royal Australian Navy to replace the Anzac Class frigates.
A decision on the successful tenderer is expected around April this year.
