Scientific Management Associates (SMA) will develop and deliver specialised integrated logistic support (ILS) documentation for the F-5000 design, should Navantia secure the $35-billion SEA 5000 Future Frigate project.

Under the agreement SMA, an independent ILS services company, will support the F-5000 Plans for training support, facilities, disposal and usage upkeep.

The SMA Group of Companies has provided project support to capital intensive industries in Australia and around the world to a range of clients that includes government agencies, military authorities, defence industry contractors and civil industry companies.

Navantia Australia managing director Donato Martinez said working with SMA's ILS managers and practitioners with strong operational and technical background will offer Navantia Australia technical advice to participate in the integrated product team for the final phase of the SEA 5000 tender.

"In addition to the F-5000’s world-leading anti-submarine and general-purpose capabilities, we are committed to a highly capable logistics and maintenance program to ensure the Royal Australian Navy has full availability of these ships," Martinez said.

General manager of SMA John Robertson said working with Navantia on this project will offer the company more opportunities to contribute to other naval projects.

"SMA’s personnel have extensive experience in the analysis, development, delivery and ongoing support of training, documentation and logistic support products for complex commercial and military systems and equipment," Robertson said. "We are excited about the opportunity to support Navantia Australia on this major national program. Working with Navantia Australia will provide us with future opportunities to contribute to international programs."

Navantia Australia personnel in Adelaide and Melbourne will work together with SMA to ensure that the F-5000’s ILS will provide high availability and service for the Royal Australian Navy.

Navantia has built the Canberra Class amphibious vessels and landing craft, the Hobart Class destroyers and is building the Supply Class replenishment vessels overseas.

It is up against BAE Systems and Fincantieri for the Future Frigates project. A decision on the project is expected by June this year.
