The defence prime has secured a design contract to help bolster the RAN’s sea-based integrated air and missile defence capabilities.

The Commonwealth government has awarded a $33 million SEA 4000 Phase 6 Combat System Design Agent (CSD-A) contract to Lockheed Martin Australia, aimed at supporting upgrades of the Aegis Combat System on the Royal Australian Navy’s Hobart Class destroyers.
This includes the integration of the Aegis Combat System Baseline 9 software.
The two-year deal involves the delivery of program work in Adelaide, expected to maximise opportunities for the company’s sovereign Future Submarine Program workforce across 40 newly created engineering and project management roles.
LMA’s local industry partners will also take part in the project, including Sydney-based maritime data company Relegen, which will support configuration updates associated with CSD-A activities.
“As the manufacturer of Aegis, the world’s most advanced combat system, Lockheed Martin Australia is proud to deliver and sustain capabilities that play a critical role in the defence of Australia’s interests, as well as those of our allies in the Indo-Pacific,” Lockheed Martin Australia and New Zealand chief executive Warren McDonald AO, CSC, said.
“Lockheed Martin Australia looks forward to collaborating with the Royal Australian Navy, industry partners and the US Navy to ensure the successful upgrade and ongoing sustainment of Australia’s Aegis Combat System.”
Lockheed Martin Australia’s acting director of RMS operations and integrated warfare systems and sensors line of business lead, Rob Milligan, said the company would foster relationships with local industry while advancing interoperability priorities.
“The Lockheed Martin Australia team will leverage the best of Australia’s industrial capability base to deliver complex Aegis Combat System Baseline 9 upgrades, while supporting a harmonised combat systems enterprise across both Hobart Class destroyers and future Hunter Class frigates,” Milligan said.
The Hobart Class destroyers are among over 100 Aegis-equipped ships deployed across the globe.
