The NSW government has issued funding for the development of new ISR technology for both civilian and military applications.

The Defence Innovation Network (DIN), backed by the NSW government, has provided $850,000 in funding to support a new technology project, aimed at enhancing intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) capability.
According to NSW chief scientist and engineer, Professor Hugh Durrant-Whyte, the project would leverage untrusted and partially compromised distributed systems to provide “timely and robust” ISR solutions across civilian and military networks without “propagating risks and vulnerabilities”.
The project, funded via Investment NSW and the Commonwealth’s Next Generation Technology Fund, is part of a broader plan to bolster cyber infrastructure, with the new projected expected to foster engagement between the civilian and defence sectors.
“This will lead to greater collaboration between the NSW defence industry and industry experts to commercialise the next generation of cyber technologies for Defence,” Minister for Jobs, Investment, Tourism and Western Sydney Stuart Ayres said.
“The project has a variety of software applications to deliver highly reliable data analysis for defence, government, business, emergency and health services.”
NSW DIN director Professor Bradley Williams said the initiative would help accelerate the commercialisation of new technologies by connecting NSW industry and academics within high-priority projects.
“This ground-breaking project will have significant implications for both technical and economic sustainability of cyber infrastructure across Australia,” he added.
NSW Defence Advocate Air Marshal (Ret'd) John Harvey, AM, PhD, also noted the opportunities for collaboration between defence, industry and academia.
DIN is a university-led initiative of the NSW government and the Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG), established in October 2017.
Partner institutions include the University of Sydney, the University of NSW, the University of Technology Sydney, Macquarie University, the University of Newcastle, Western Sydney University, and the University of Wollongong.
