Safran completes acquisition of Orolia, plans course for leadership in resilient positioning, navigation and timing

Safran Electronics & Defense has finalised the acquisition of leading positioning, navigation and timing (PNT) company Orolia, having begun negotiations in December 2021.

Safran Electronics & Defense has finalised the acquisition of leading positioning, navigation and timing (PNT) company Orolia, having begun negotiations in December 2021.

According to a release, Safran hopes to use the acquisition to “become the world leader in resilient PNT”.

Orolia, a leading developer of atomic clocks, time servers, emergency locator beacons, as well as simulation and resilience solutions for GNSS signals, currently employs over 435 people across Europe and Northern America, reporting revenues of some €100 million.

The acquisition is hoped to provide synergies within Safran’s core business, with Orolia’s time management solutions enhancing Safran’s positioning and navigation solutions.

The synergies are expected to produce a complete set of resilient PNT architectures across aviation, defence, space and transportation markets.

“Orolia could not imagine a better fit than with Safran to secure its growth and leverage its PNT leadership positions. Thanks to the addition of best-in-class timing and inertial technologies, premier access to the largest defense and aerospace markets, and a proven track record in government program capture and execution, Safran and Orolia now have all the cards in hand to establish themselves as the resilient PNT leader,” Jean-Yves Courtois, chief executive officer of Orolia said.

Martin Sion, chief executive officer of Safran Electronics & Defense reiterated the benefits of the acquisition.

“The acquisition of Orolia makes Safran one of the only companies with the full complement of PNT technologies, bringing together Orolia’s precise time referencing and Safran Electronics & Defense’s proven inertial navigation solutions. Our shared ambition is to become the world leader in resilient PNT for all conventional and strategic applications,” he said.
